Small clues. Big stories.

P-Noy’s fourth State of the Nation Address, without a doubt, is going to be debatable for days, weeks, even months. A lot of concerns were not addressed and even with the data being laid out, there is still a need for further explanations. There is too much that needs to be discussed concerning his bosses, the masa.

Still, it is always commendable that P-Noy has always been using Filipino in giving his speech. There is no clearer message than using a language your bosses can fully understand. It shows respect, it shows sincerity. It shows that the matuwid na daan is not limited to English speakers which, in this country, are regarded to be the elite. P-Noy reported to all the people, not just to some people.
Another thing that is worth noting is the credibility carried by P-Noy throughout his term. It has remained intact and unbiased, which adds to the prestige his family has carried all these years. Hence, the people are able to look at the government with less cynicism. After the previous administration of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, an administration infamous with multiple intrigues and scandals which has betrayed the people for years, they are now once again ready to believe that there is still someone they can trust.

It shows how reputation is important. Can you imagine if it was the former president delivering the SONA and speaking proud of the government’s accomplishments? I can already see the people smirking from their TVs, shaking their heads thinking that it holds no truth.

But this kind of attitude also poses a dilemma. It seems that P-Noy is the only person we can see that can change the crooked ways of this country. We still view the matuwid na daan as P-Noy’s personal crusade when it has to be our crusade. The dependency of the administration with one person’s leadership is too crucial and unstable. We remain buoyed by one man’s spirit and drive.

No change can happen overnight, or in this case, over six years. But we have to believe that change can happen, regardless of the circumstances. Change is now being laid out in front of us, no matter how significant, no matter how slow. We have gone too far and it’s not impossible that we will experience true transformation.

Attitude is important. Reputation is important. But above all, we need dedication to continue this crusade. Our crusade.
