Loud cheers reverberated inside San Juan Arena as the battle heated up between the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers and the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors. The shrieks intensified more as a young woman on the UST courtside stole the spotlight with her game reports; but more than just an icon in the field of courtside reporting, Ma. Kristina “Tina" Marasigan is more than just a courtside beauty.

Born on the 2nd of May, this 24-year-old, 5’8", BS Psychology graduate, fashion model, beauty queen-turned-courtside reporter seems to be having the peak of her career at the moment. This Batangueña beauty admits that being a courtside reporter (CSR) is a “very rewarding" job for her because here she was able to hone her skills in speaking live on-camera.

BROADCASTING — HER LIFE-LONG DREAM

She has dreamed of broadcasting since she was in high school, but her path changed because she did not continue going to the school she planned on going to. “Medyo nag-iba ‘yung plan ko kasi ‘yung ina-eye ko na school, hindi ako natuloy na dun mag-aral, and sabi ko if hindi ako mag-aaral sa school na ‘to ng communications, specifically for being a reporter, I won’t try it to other schools, so pre-med na lang ako sa UST kasi sabi ko Psych naman is both pre-med and pre-law, so if in case I wanna pursue studies for med school and also for law school, pwede ‘yung BS Psych, macecredit ‘yung iba kong units and also if I want to go teaching, pwede rin," Tina said during the interview.

TINA’S ORDINARY DAY

Aside from reporting for the UAAP team, UST Growling Tigers, Tina also does daily traffic news for DZMM. She also does Bilis-Balita for TJ Manotoc which is aired on Studio 23. According to her, when there are no anchors available during the night, she does anchoring jobs for DZMM Tele-radyo, which is aired on both radio and television (TV). She said that each day she starts by praying, and that every day is an opportunity for her to make herself better and show her bosses that she can do whatever they want her to do anytime, anywhere.

HER ROLE-MODEL

She looks up to Maria Ressa, a Cable News Network, Inc. (CNN) Filipino correspondent who is based here in the Philippines. She admires the said reporter because she said that Ressa is not for the corruption in journalism. "…Given that Maria Ressa has that stand if being anti-corruption in journalism, ‘yon, I look up to her for that," she said.

ON HER BB. PILIPINAS JOURNEY

The jolly side of Tina was revealed when she was asked if she is still planning to join Bb. Pilipinas, and she exclaimed, “Actually, alam mo kagabi napanaginipan ko, nanalo daw ako ng Miss Universe!" Tina said that being able to be one of the top finalists in her batch who joined the said pageant was already a big achievement for her. She said that joining the pageant opened a big opportunity for her in public speaking, and in getting what she really wanted — broadcasting.

THIRD YEAR OR NI THIRD YEAR AS CSR?

ABS-CBN only allows CSRs a maximum of two years in reporting for a participating UAAP school, and Tina was aware that UST coaches still wants her to do the courtside reporting job for the next season, but she conceded that she also wants to “grow" as a reporter, and that as she gets older, the people she works within the the team, the athletes, are also getting younger as the years go by. She believes that UST has a lot of talented students who are ready to face the challenge of becoming a CSR and she wants them to experience what she has experienced as CSR.

A TOTALLY DIFFERENT SIDE OF TINA

When asked about her life outside of courtside reporting, Tina did not hesitate in saying that she is a family-oriented person, being the eldest of three siblings. Whenever she has the time it will be most likely that she will spend it with her family and friends. “Kasi most of the time I’m really working, so ‘yon, kapag may free time, family lang talaga and friends," Tina shares.

Tina admits of being an all-out Backstreet Boys fan. “Whenever I’m stressed, I listen to Backstreet Boys," Tina confessed.

Her playlist containing any Backstreet Boys songs is joined by Madonna and Katy Perry. Tina said she loves listening to pop music to take the stress away.

She is also a self-confessed lover of fruity flavors. For her, if ever snow would fall in any flavor, the best flavor would be mango. "…Mahilig talaga kasi ako sa… mga fruity flavor. Instead of mga dairies na milk, chocolate, hindi masyado kasi bawal din dahil ‘yung boses, so more on mango. Parang slush, ‘di ba ang sarap?"

ADVISE TO ASPIRING CSRs

“Just be yourself!" is her message to all aspiring reporters. For her, being a CSR is not always about yourself or how you look on-screen, but about how you are going to narrate and deliver the story in your own way. “Kung paano ka magsalita, just narrate the story of the players, of the team, of the coaching staff. Kung ano ‘yung mood nila, kung ano ‘yung struggles nila, kung ano ‘yung victory nila sa game. So hindi mo kailangan na mag-focus sa sarili mo. Ang kailangan mong i-focus ‘yung istorya na ibibigay mo, so ‘yun, dun lang talaga lagi magre-revolve," Tina advises.

HER FINAL WORSS AND GRATITUDE

Tina is very thankful to all the people who are supporting her since she started as a courtside reporter. "…Maraming, maraming, maraming salamat kasi the UST community really gave me my identity in this industry, in the media setting," she said. According to her, she will not be who he is today if not for the people who continuously support her. She hopes that even if ever she will not be reporting for UST anymore, the crowd will still continue to support the UST Growling Tigers and the Lady Tigresses as they continue their journey in the sports arena, because according to her, the crowd gives the players the strength to fight. Tina also shared what outgoing Growling Tigers Captain, Jeric Fortuna told her, that it is hard to play without the Yellow Jackets, or if there are only few people watching the game, so she hopes that the UST crowd will continue on supporting and cheering for the UST Growling Tigers.
