Is it true that our movie industry is slowly fading? Well, if records and recognitions are to ask, no its not. Our very own local films continue to be critically and commercially renowned. It is not just locally acclaimed but internationally acclaimed as well.
From the past ten years, the overwhelming support of moviegoers is very evident as box-office gross continues to increase. Star Cinema’s “Sukob” ( 186 Million Pesos ) , “Tanging Ina” ( 178 Million Pesos ) and “ Anak” ( 168 Million Pesos ) were able to surpass the 100 Million Peso mark. However, another milestone in our movie industry happened last 2011 because the 200 Million Peso – 300 Million Peso mark was reached. Star Cinema and Viva Films “No Other Woman” ( 276 Million Pesos ) and “Praybet Benjamin” ( 332 Million Pesos ) broke the box-office records. Just last year, a Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry toppled all box-office records and is now considered as the highest-grossing Filipino movie of all time. Star Cinema and Viva Film’s “Sisterakas” grossed more than 391 Million Pesos.

The success of our movie industry does not only highlight on its box-office returns but also on its awards and recognitions. Vilma Santos’ “Sister Stella L.” ( 1984 ) and Nora Aunor’s “Himala” ( 1986 ) are just some of the films that were internationally acclaimed. Some quality films from the 70’s and 80’s were also digitally restored for the younger generation to enjoy and appreciate like “Maynila: Sa Kuko ng Liwanag” and “ Himala”.

2013 seems to be a good year for our movie industry both for mainstream and Independent Film (Indie) category. The Sarah Geronimo- John Lloyd Cruz starrer “It Takes A Man and A Woman” from Star Cinema and Viva Films grossed more than 375 Million Pesos and is now considered as the second highest-grossing Filipino movie of all time. Popular Film Outfits Star Cinema and Reality Entertainment just recently released “On The Job” that starred Piolo Pascual and Gerald Anderson. The film was able to be shown abroad and had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France and was included in the Director’s Fortnight Category. This October, another Star Cinema-Reality Entertainment masterpiece is about to be shown via “Kung Fu Divas” starring Aiai Delas Alas and Marian Rivera. It is said to be the biggest action-comedy movie because of the extensive use of CGI effects that made it bigger and grand.

Quality Independent Films are also shown thru Cinema Festival, Cinema One Originals and Sineng Pambansa. This festivals aim to give quality films with mature and in-depth analysis of reality. They also give chance to aspiring filmmakers for them to showcase their knowledge and talents. Recently, Cinemalaya Entry “Transit” was chosen as Philippines Official Entry for the 86th Academy Awards. Another achievement for our movie industry that needs to be proud of.

Filipino’s never-ending support and appreciation for our local movies is needed for the industry to grow and develop. As long as the moviegoers are there alongside film outfits, our movie industry will never die. If foreigners can appreciate our movies, why can’t we? Before we appreciate the beauty of Hollywood movies, try to see first a local movie to see that it also has a quality made for every Filipino moviegoer.
