Small clues. Big stories.

To be a boxing champion holding eight titles is one thing to admire about Manny Pacquiao, but running for presidency is another.

We cannot hold it against the Pambansang Kamao if he aspires for greater and bigger things. Aspirations drive us to do better and be better. It drives us towards success even. But aspirations without the right vision will obviously get you lost. Even before Pacquaio became “The Champ,” he was winning and losing battles left and right. He climbed the ladder all the way to the top. Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. advised Pacquiao to get more training in the Senate first and I think that won’t do any harm. It’s useful even. As cliché as it may sound, experience is  the best teacher.

Being responsible for the lives of 95 million people is not a walk in the park. It’s just interesting to know what’s going on in Pacquiao’s head right now. Being one of the House’s top two absentees in the 15th Congress, the idea of presidency, apparently, has not escaped him. Pacquiao said that when he entered politics, he wanted to be a champion. But maybe being a champion does not mean becoming a president. Maybe to be a champion is to be a responsible public servant regardless of your position. Maybe to be a champion is to fulfill your duties effectively – no absents, no excuses, no going to Las Vegas to watch or make a fight.

The prestige of becoming a public servant is not given but earned. Sad to say, the prestige has lost its meaning; thanks to the scoundrels lurking in the chambers of Malacañang. If Pacquiao wants to become the president, I hope his reasons are not personal but altruistic. Too many people are warring to hold positions in the public office only for glory and gain and we don’t need another one.

We cannot conquer all fields. As for Manny Pacquiao, maybe the government is not his ring. Besides, he’s only 37 years old, still young and has many things to learn. He still can’t make it in the next presidential election. Before he decided to enter politics, he finished his studies and we commend him for that. If he had his heart set on the highest position in the government, he might as well prove to us he deserve it, along with his golden belts. There are still a lot to prove before he takes the big punch.
