No SK elections will be held this year.

President Benigno Aquino III settles such restless issue after enacting a measure postponing the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls this month.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte announced on a briefing, that was also uploaded to the Presidential Communication Operations Office website that the President had signed on Friday “an Act to Postpone the Sangguniang Kabataang Elections on October 28, 2013 Amending for the Purpose Republic Act 9340 and for other Purposes."

Both houses of Congress ratified on September 24, the bicameral report on the postponement of the SK polls.

The SK elections will be rescheduled between October 28, 2014 and February 23, 2015.  Until then, the posts in the youth council will remain vacant as the law stated that there would be “no holdover” for incumbent SK officials.

About 42,000 seats for SK chairmen and 300,000 seats for SK council are the positions aspiring leaders aim for.

Some allegations of corruption in the system had triggered lawmakers to act upon the reform or abolition of SK elections.

The youth body was criticized for allegedly becoming a breeding ground for traditional politics and corruption.
